Ernest Dean Newson - Confectioner and Baker (K1937, SRB1938-50)

The late J B Harris spent boyhood holidays with his family in Southwold and, in his memoir, 'Memories of Southwold 1920 - 1939', recalls: "There was Newson the bakers... who sold the most delicious ices. 1d cornets and 2d wafers, The son, Ginger, used to do the deliveries on a bicycle with a small front wheel with a large basket above it. Besides speed, he was noted for his ginger hair and the shrillest of whistles. Later on Ginger became a loved character but, sadly, he lost interest in life." Quoted with the kind permission of J B Harris's widow, Mary.

Ernest Dean Newson - Confectioner and Baker (SRB 1938-50)

John 'Wiggy' Goldsmith was a paper boy in the early 1940s. He remembers "... up Station Road, York Road, Godyll Road, South Green and back. I used to call in at Ginger Newson's. Every day Ginger's father used to make me a cup of coffee and I had the choice of one of his lovely chocolate-topped things or a chelsea - a real chelsea bun! All the officers used to go in there, too. But the ordinary soldiers went next door to the Naafi - where The Homestead is now."

'Ginger's House' on the corner of South Green and Park Lane. The bake house with its chimney survives and Ginger's memory is preserved in the name and in the relief image of the man himself over the door.
